Sustainability Starts at Home

Although new homes reduce the overall stress of moving, meaning you only have to think about unpacking and arranging your furniture, it can still feel like your to-do list is as long as your arm, so adding ‘being a responsible green homeowner’ on top of everything else, could feel like one task too many. To help you start as you mean to go on and integrate sustainability into your daily life, here are some easy tips for new homeowners to consider:

1. Unplug appliances and switch off lights when not in use! You may think you do this already, but we are all guilty of leaving the TV on standby, leaving a phone charger plugged in all day or accidently leaving the lights on in the downstairs toilet. Making a real effort to do this will save you money and help reduce carbon emissions.

2. Use a low or cold setting on your washing machine. Fear not, your clothes will still come out fresh and clean! Once we return to summer months, hang your clothes to dry outside and in the meantime, use a clothes horse – a straightforward and cheap alternative to using the dryer.

3. Reduce, Reuse, Restyle. Your new-build will be a spotless, blank canvas ready for you to make your mark. Instead of purchasing new furniture and home accessories, get crafty and try upcycling items you already own. There are also some great pre-loved finds in local charity shops and endless online inspiration to make your home style eco-friendly and truly unique!

4. Grow some vegetables or herbs in your garden for the optimum ‘locally produced’ food. Not only does this help the environment and your shopping bills, but it’s a fun, healthy and often therapeutic hobby. It is also a great way for children to get involved too!
