As we approach the end of our building journey at The Place, we wanted to highlight the significance of the scheme, its history, and the completion of the site’s centrepiece; the renovation of The Bury.
We’re proud to have created a unique development here with a diverse range of homes including individual apartments, spacious coach houses, charming two and three-bedroom cottage-style homes and double fronted four-bedroom properties.
Transforming The Bury, a manor house dating back to 1854, from its derelict state, into four beautiful apartments, has been a painstaking but thoroughly worthwhile journey. It has seen specialists offer their expertise, hundreds of hours of research into the site’s background and hard work from our dedicated team on site during the 500 plus days of renovation – not to mention the thousands of cups of tea and biscuits consumed.
For the History Buffs
Anyone interested in the heritage of a landmark building will find the history of The Bury a fascinating one. With its series of eclectic owners to its extraordinary architectural development, the mansion’s past is a compelling one.
For readers wanting a quick overview of The Bury’s incredible origins, we have condensed just under 400 years of existence into a few sentences!
As with many historic buildings, The Bury has seen a series of different custodians over the course of its lifetime, starting with the Cater family in 1630. William Cater of London bought the nearby manors of Kempston Hastingsbury and Kempston Hardwick in 1624 for £7,200 (£946,944 in today’s currency!) and rebuilt the manor house, creating The Bury.
The original house, The Place, was eventually pulled down in the mid-1850s and the current building, renamed The Bury, which we have carefully renovated and restored, was built on the plot of land. In December 1962, the former Ministry of Public Buildings and Works listed the garden walls, piers, gates and railings at The Bury as Grade II, of special interest.
Restoring The Bury to its former glory was our mission. Enlisting the help of a team of experts to ensure as many elements of the original building and its structure could be retained, we set about preserving the rich history of The Bury to create 4 beautiful homes. From historians to archaeologists, conservation professionals to structural engineers, this project has been extremely rewarding for everyone involved.
Final Product
Three years in the making, our development, The Place is now complete and its striking focal point, The Bury, is receiving the final touches to its restoration, having been converted into four stylish apartments designed to meet the needs of today’s buyer. The old orchard has been retained as an area of public open space and on top of the Grade II listed piers, two imposing stone eagles continue to sit proud, watching over their new neighbourhood.
The apartments we have created are testament not only to the remarkable architecture of the Victorian era, but also the modern building materials and techniques which have been blended into the new design.
We have just one apartment left, Plot 55; a two-bedroom, second floor apartment, accessed through The Bury’s historic archway. Enjoying high ceilings and large windows with views over the park, the prestigious apartment makes an impressive home.
