Ultimate Guide to Summer in Bedfordshire

Storey Homes’ Ultimate Guide to Summer in Bedfordshire

After what seems like a long (rainy) wait, we’ve finally hit summer and can’t think of a better place to be than Bedfordshire. For those living in and around Houghton Regis, there are lots of activities to choose from all year-round, but during these brighter months, the county truly comes to life. To help you make the most of summer, we’ve rounded up some of the best options for you and your family to enjoy.

For those with youngsters

For any parents out there asking, “How am I going to entertain these energetic minds for six whole weeks?”, you are in luck. Houghton Regis, Dunstable, Bedford and all the neighbourhoods in-between have an endless list of exciting activities and places to visit, perfect for children.

Just down the road from our development, Bidwell Mews, is the incredible Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Estate; a great place for summer outings. The natural attraction will keep you and your children busy for hours but to maximise the enjoyment, the grounds also host Summer of Sport, a campaign running throughout the summer holidays. Offering free family activities and games daily including football, hockey, tennis, athletics and volleyball, it’s time to get your competitive shoes on!

Nearby, Whipsnade Zoo is also hosting a summer-long event – Beano Goes Wild – where mischievous kids can help Dennis and his friends learn about animal conservation. Join your favourite Beano characters on the comic strip trail around the zoo and learn about how to protect wildlife, meet the park’s amazing animals and take part in thrilling games and interactive challenges.

Other favourites amongst local families include Orbital Trampoline Park in Luton, Dunstable Leisure Centre and finally, Mead Open Farm which is just 10-minutes drive from our Bidwell Mews homes. The farm has an amazing timetable of events across the sunny season, including arts and crafts workshops, a roar-some dinner with dinosaurs and Buzzstock Festival, a truly memorable day of camping and music.

Sunny Days of Relaxation

For those without young children or for exhausted parents finally enjoying some time to themselves, Bovingdon is hosting a Summer Flower Show on 24th and 25th June, organised by Bovingdon Horticultural Society. Here, locals are encouraged to enter their homegrown flowers and plants or simply wander around the show taking in the sights and lovely smells.

If you’re looking for something a bit different to do, Dunstable Town Council is hosting Priory Pictures in Priory Gardens on 12th August. Showing three films across the day and into the evening, grab your drinks, snacks and picnic blankets for this free activity. There’s also an opportunity to get a say in which films are shown by voting in the council’s Facebook poll!

Finally, if you love a classic car, Houghton Hall Park is hosting a Classics in the Park event on Sunday 9th July where visitors can pay £5 to show off their antique automobile and be in with a chance of winning a trophy. Or, just pop down to see the cars and enjoy the food and drink stalls.

Whatever takes your fancy, Houghton Regis and its surroundings will make your summer one to remember! Let’s hope the sun keeps shining throughout…
